What is Emotional Intelligence?

Understanding the needs of employees and managers often requires the ability to read their emotions and interpret them correctly. Emotional intelligence skills are particularly important in sectors such as marketing, consumer behavior analytics, services marketing, customer services, and consulting. Over the years, there have been several models for measuring emotional intelligence. These include the ability model, mixed model and trait model.

  • Ability model: this model portrays emotions as information sources which aid in making sense of the environment and social behavior. It broadly divides emotions into four types of abilities; managing emotions, perceiving emotions, understanding emotions and using emotions.
  • Mixed model: This model measures one’s level of competencies and skills as managers or leaders. According to this model, the ‘constructs’ that make a good leader are self-awareness, self-control, social skills, empathy, and motivation.
  • Trait model: this model is slightly different from the other models as it looks into the emotional abilities of humans outside the cognitive capability and measures the ‘extra’ element which is somewhat rare.

An important step in emotional intelligence training courses is using these models to identify a participants level of emotional intelligence to determine where improvements are needed

The Importance of Emotional Intelligence

Corporate surveys of chief executive officers and other top level managers have shown that emotional intelligence is highly important for fostering productivity, success, performance enhancement and inspiration. There are many reasons that emotional intelligence is one of the deciding factors for leadership success:

  • It is a high determinant of their self-awareness scale: higher emotional intelligence means leaders have the ability to judge the strengths and weaknesses of their employees.
  • Higher emotional intelligence comes in handy for emotional management of the employees: after interpreting the emotions of the employees and subordinates, it is important to manage them benefiting both the individual and organization.
  • Emotional intelligence sparks effective communication, which is vital for successful leaders.
  • Increases the ability for social awareness: it increases the empathetic abilities of the leaders helping them get the best out of employees.
  • Emotional intelligence is imperative for conflict resolution: leaders with emotional intelligence are often more fair with their subordinates because they take into consideration the interests and concerns of all.

An emotional intelligence training course can improve these necessary skills.

Emotional Intelligence Training Courses

Emotional intelligence training is delivered in many different formats. It often takes the form of on-site training programs where professionals share their experiences and take part in engagement activities with the employees. Emotional intelligence training courses are also widely available as scheduled, 2-3 day workshops. For those more limited on time, online emotional intelligence training courses also exist.

Important concepts and topics covered during emotional intelligence training includes body language, taxonomy of human emotions, the science of cognitive abilities and emotions and effective communication traits and abilities.

Emotional intelligence training can be extremely valuable for professionals looking to further their careers in managerial and leadership in any business area. Not only does it help professionally, but these skills can be very useful on a personal level.

Empathy Training Courses

A big part of emotional intelligence is empathy - the ability to "feel" and understand what others are feeling. Because understanding the emotions of others is such a key skill for emotional intelligence, most of the courses above will include a good amount of empathy training.

While some people are naturally empathetic, others struggle with this important interpersonal skill. Luckily, with practice and training, it is possible to develop empathy even as an adult.

Formal empathy courses usually take participants through a series of stages. The first is helping them understand why empathy is important and how to better recognize when others are feeling emotions and respond appropriately

Typically, the second and third stages involve seeing models (usually on video or written) of people responding with empathy and then practicing empathy. At the last stage, the empathy trainer will give participants feedback on how well they are showing empathy and suggestions for further improvements.

Emotional Intelligence Training for Leaders

While emotional intelligence is an important skill for anyone, emotional intelligence is particularly essential for leaders and managers. It helps you be more aware of your own feelings to avoid reacting to situations under the influence of pride or self-esteem, interpret the feelings and reactions of employees and predict how they might react to things so that you can head off negative reactions, and recognize signs of stress and emotional distress in employees so that you can react accordingly. Become a better leader with emotional intelligence training.
