Artificial Intelligence, ChatGPT and Emotional Intelligence

Want to find out why ChatGPT is not as smart as you think it is? Read the article from Ei4Change to understand the crucial limitations of emotional intelligence in AI.

Artificial Intelligence, known as AI, has made significant advances in recent years, enabling machines to perform complex tasks and mimic humanlike interactions.  However, there is one critical aspect that remains absent in AI systems such as ChatGPT and that is emotional intelligence.

For leaders, understanding the limitations of emotional intelligence in artificial intelligence is crucial for setting realistic expectations and ensuring the responsible utilisation of these technologies.

Why Do AI and ChatGPT Lack Emotional Intelligence?

The term "emotional intelligence" was brought into mainstream psychology in the 1990s, defined as “the ability to monitor one’s own and other’s emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use the information to guide one’s thinking and actions”.

It was brought into the mainstream by Daniel Goleman in his popular book on the topic and defined as “a person's ability to manage their feelings so that those feelings are expressed appropriately and effectively.”

So, does ChatGPT have emotional intelligence? Let's find out...

While AI models like ChatGPT excel in processing and generating text, their inability to understand and respond to emotions limits their capability to truly empathise and connect with users.

We can appreciate this when we consider once again the simple definition of emotional intelligence as the capacity to combine thinking with feelings to make authentic decisions and build quality relationships.

Emotional intelligence encompasses the ability to recognise, understand, and manage emotions, both in yourself and in others.  It involves skills like empathy, emotional awareness, and the capacity to navigate social interactions effectively.  These qualities are deeply rooted in human experiences and are challenging to replicate in artificial intelligence systems.

Does Not Feel Emotion

While ChatGPT is a powerful language model capable of generating coherent responses, it lacks the ability to comprehend emotions.  ChatGPT operates based on statistical patterns and text associations derived from vast amounts of data. It doesn't possess genuine emotions or an inherent understanding of human feelings.

Cannot Interpret From Context

Emotional intelligence relies heavily on understanding and interpreting the emotional context of a conversation. It involves recognising subtle cues, body language, and tone of voice. ChatGPT, being a text-based model, is unable to process these nonverbal signals, making it challenging to gauge emotions accurately.

Lack of Empathy

Empathy is a cornerstone of emotional intelligence, which involves genuinely understanding and sharing the emotions of others.  While ChatGPT can offer responses that may appear empathetic, it lacks the underlying emotional experience that enables true empathy.  It's limited to mimicking empathy based on learned patterns rather than generating neural connections and genuinely experiencing emotions.

The Ethical Concerns

The absence of emotional intelligence in AI systems raises ethical concerns.  Emotional engagement plays a crucial role in sensitive areas such as mental health support, counselling, coaching, and therapy. Relying solely on AI without emotional intelligence can result in impersonal or inappropriate responses, potentially causing harm to individuals in vulnerable situations.

The Future-- Becoming Emotional

Exciting efforts for the future are underway to bridge the gap between artificial intelligence and emotional intelligence, a.k.a.., emotional artificial intelligence. Researchers are exploring ways to incorporate recognising and responding to human emotions. Advances in this field may pave the way for AI systems capable of understanding and empathising with users' emotions, but this will always be limited because machines do not possess the tool responsible for emotional intelligence - a human brain.
