More about Professional Development Opportunities in North Carolina

One of the original Thirteen Colonies, North Carolina has a vast and influential history. North Carolina is located in the Southeastern region of the United States, directly above its sister-state – South Carolina. Rounding out the top ten most populous states in the United States is North Carolina with a population of almost 10 million.

North Carolina's History

North Carolina was the first colony to vote for independence from Great Britain at the Continental Congress in April of 1776. Though the colony was overall pro-independence, many North Carolina residents’ allegiances lied with the British throne. As a result, guerrilla warfare erupted between the Patriots (pro-independence citizens) and the Loyalists (pro-Britain citizens). Following the victory of the American War of Independence, many loyalists from North Carolina fled back to their home land of England or to Florida, which was still a British colony at the time.

Once the war ended and independence was won, North Carolina became the 12th colony to ratify the Constitution and be officially admitted as a state to the Union. When the Civil War split the country in half, North Carolina sided with the Confederate States of America and seceded from the Union.

The Economy of North Carolina

Throughout the state’s history, there has been a noticeable difference between the economic growth of its urban areas and its rural areas. The larger cities in North Carolina, notably Raleigh, the state’s capital, Charlotte, and Greensboro have seen rapid economic and population expansion. The smaller, more rural cities have had a much worse fate – high unemployment rates and a decrease in population. This can be attributed to the fact that many small towns throughout North Carolina developed on and heavily relied on the textile industries. Due to the industrial growth in other countries, many businesses have begun outsourcing their work, leaving many job vacancies in the rural small towns. Despite this decrease in jobs, North Carolina remains the largest textile employer in the United States.

North Carolina has a diversified economy, with successful businesses the agriculture, manufacturing, finance, technology, and tourism industries. Within the agriculture industry, North Carolina produces more tobacco than any other state in the nation. Tobacco has become imbedded in the state's economy, and is a vital source of revenue. In recent years, the interest and demand for organic food and products have sparked a new interest in the agriculture of North Carolina, and the industry is beginning to grow in new ways.

Business and Finance in North Carolina

The largest city in North Carolina, Charlotte, has experienced high population and economic growth, mostly from the city's success in the finance industry. After New York City, Charlotte is the largest banking center in the United States and is the home of the Bank of America. Additionally, a number of Fortune 500 companies are based in Charlotte. This impressive business and finance climate paves the way for truly talented and inspirational employees to explore the business realm and find success. If you are looking for business or finance training in North Carolina, explore the list of training options above. The state is flourishing in the industry and is a great match for any aspiring business leader!
