Theories in Supply ChainSupply Chain Management

Supply chain management is a broad field with a range of different theories pertaining to it’s subsequent parts and processes, rather than any single core understanding. Within the broader supply chain, for example, there are independent concepts governing costs , such as transaction cost analysis (TCA), customer service, or customer relationship management (CRM) and inventory, like channel coordination. Many theories within supply chain management work in congress while others are limited in use to a given set of circumstances. When looking for the right course in supply chain management consider searching based on business needs, whether for a short product life-cycle or an approach better suited to the global supply chain.

The primary areas of study within supply chain management include:

  • Procurement
  • Contracting and Sub-Contracting
  • Finance for Supply Management
  • Tax and Legal for Supply Management
  • Inventory
  • Strategic Cost Management

At their core, every link in the supply chain is designed with the same ultimate purpose in mind: the creation of value leading to an overall competitive advantage. While no two supply chains will look exactly the same, all supply chain professionals are working towards this same value creation goal. This is the case whether through developing an appropriate and competitive strategy, building customer relationships, handling external logistics and transport, or managing inventory and storage of goods.

Global Supply Chain Management

As business moves more and more onto the global stage, supply chain management takes on a number of new components and considerations. Companies must be more aware of navigating national laws surrounding the transport of commercial goods, new collaborations with goods providers, and much more. The greater distance creates time management issues. The introduction of national borders means a variety of tax laws, trading protocols and cultural considerations.

Supply Chain and Tax Efficiency – Silo Busting in the Modern Age

Tax Efficient Supply Chain Management (TESCM) is an ever-changing field within supply chain management, given the increase in multinationals and internationals attempting to integrate global tax planning as part of the overall management of their supply chain. TESCM often involves a restructuring of the organization’s supply chain departments, combining tax management and operations.

Social Responsibility and Sustainability for Supply Chain Management

Along with the corporate needs to create the greatest amount of value possible, the supply chain is governed by social and environmental needs to conduct business in a manner that is both sustainable and socially responsible. While these two forces may at first appear to be at odds, a socially and environmentally responsible supply chain ensures strong and long lasting relationships at every interaction. Courses in social responsibility for supply chains generally instruct delegates in:

  • The business case for responsible supply chains
  • Collaborative strategies, pricing, and procurement
  • Social responsibility intitiatives that build the supply chain
