How to Showcase Your Professional Development on LinkedIn

Do you find that simply listing your degrees on your LinkedIn profile doesn't highlight all of the learning and development you've done since finishing at university?

You're not alone.

That's why LinkedIn has developed a feature to help you showcase the courses you've completed during your career.

There are two methods of listing your professional development courses on LinkedIn and each has its advantages. If you would like to emphasize how you've endeavored to develop yourself through short courses while on the job, listing courses under the Experience section of your LinkedIn would be the right decision for you.

If you've completed longer courses that result in qualifications, the Education section of your resume can help make your degrees look more up-to-date.

1. Experience

How to add this:

1. Click on your LinkedIn profile

2. Scroll down to the "Accomplishments" section of your profile

3. Click the "+" icon in the corner and select "Course" from the drop-down list

4. Relate the course to the job position and company that the course is most closely associated with on your profile. If the course is related to more than one position, relate the course to your latest role to showcase it near the top or your profile, or the company you were working with at the time you took the course.

5. Click "Save"

The course will now show in the Accomplishments section of your LinkedIn profile.

2. Education

How to add this:

1. Scroll down to the "Education" section on your profile. Depending on your settings this may be anywhere on your profile but it usually features prominently in the first two sections.

2. Click the "+" icon

3. Add the name of the training company that led your course as well as the year. Decide whether your course fits better into the "Degree" or "Field of Study" box, depending on the length of the course and whether it resulted in a qualification.

4. If the course or training is an important topic for potential employers, consider writing a description that is focused on how your training helped you advance your skills and accomplish personal and company goals.

5. Click "Save"

The course will now show in your Education description beside your other qualifications and educational achievements.
