Petrophysics

Petrophysics is an interdisciplinary subject encompassing topics in hydrology, mineralogy, geology, and petroleum studies. The studies involve exploration of the key properties of rocks and minerals including characteristics including lithology, density, permeability, porosity, and water saturation. The chemical and physical properties of the rocks are classified into three categories: rock mineral properties, ore quality, and conventional petrophysical properties.

Several methods for studying the properties of rocks and minerals are used, some of which are:

  •         Coring or core analysis: in this process, substances are retrieved from the surfaces and measured by the wells drilled into the fields.
  •         Well logging: this is an inexpensive method of obtaining physical properties down hole

These methods are primarily used for extracting minerals, rocks and other substances from the surface and underground, and exploring their properties.
