Petrophysics

Petrophysics is an interdisciplinary subject encompassing topics in hydrology, mineralogy, geology, and petroleum studies. The studies involve exploration of the key properties of rocks and minerals including characteristics including lithology, density, permeability, porosity, and water saturation. The chemical and physical properties of the rocks are classified into three categories: rock mineral properties, ore quality, and conventional petrophysical properties.

Several methods for studying the properties of rocks and minerals are used, some of which are:

  •         Coring or core analysis: in this process, substances are retrieved from the surfaces and measured by the wells drilled into the fields.
  •         Well logging: this is an inexpensive method of obtaining physical properties down hole

These methods are primarily used for extracting minerals, rocks and other substances from the surface and underground, and exploring their properties.

Petrophysics Training Courses

Petrophysics courses are available in many branches such as applied petrophysics and engineering petrophysics. These courses prepare professionals to develop top-notch analytical skills such as identification and quantification of reservoir properties in the subsurface. The petrophysics courses equip candidates with skills in well evaluation techniques.

The fundamentals of the course include core well measurements, petrophysical relations, principles of petrophysics, and modern interpretation methods. The illustrations in the courses involve emphasizing relationships between seismology, geology, reservoir engineering, and well log analysis. The professional training additionally emphasizes the petrophysical calculations. Some important concepts covered in these courses include explanation of cross plots for porosity and lithology, open hole log devices are discussed in detail including properties and principles, shale volume estimations, uncertainty analysis, and capillary curves properties and pressure points.

Training Courses Formats

Professional training petrophysics courses are offered in various formats including traditional classroom teachings and online formats. Since the courses tend to be highly technical, some training providers offer professional training for these courses on-site. Online courses give professionals the flexibility to attend classes and exams and the ability to revisit course materials at any time.

Professional training courses in petrophysics offer a useful blend of project management, site management, work safety, and leadership knowledge along with the incorporation of engineering and technical skills.

Career Prospects for Professionals

Professionals graduating from petrophysics courses and majors can apply for jobs in various sectors including manufacturing, R&D firms, universities, fellowship programs, oil companies, trading, exporting, and offshore oil and gas firms. These courses are ideal for professionals with a keen interest in geophysics, earth sciences, oil and natural resources, and those who are willing to expand their careers in different sectors of science and development firms. Engineering professions can also be explored with these qualifications such as drilling engineers and reservoir engineers.
