Teaching Reading (Online)
Review the skills needed to pass the Instructional Paraprofessionals exam as you explore creative ways to present reading skills to students. Learn how to help students at all levels get excited about reading and how to best assess their reading skills. This course is applicable to teachers as well as instructional paraprofessionals.

Lesson 1: Getting Started
While there are many scientific claims as to the best way to teach reading, when it comes down to it, the best way is what works for you and your students. Explore different ways to improve your teaching and gain new set of tools to pick and choose from as you teach.
Lesson 2: Bonding and Sharing
Explore ways to bond with students, learning about them and their reading habits while sharing your stories and reading habits with them.
Lesson 3: Teaching With a Sense of Urgency
Examine the Optimal Learning Model for teaching reading, which helps move students from dependence on the teacher to independent learning.
Lesson 4: Getting Ready
Working with students to create a classroom library is a good way to get them excited about reading. Helping them pick books that are appropriate for them will help them succeed and improve at reading. Explore guidelines for creating a classroom library and for helping students choose books to read. We'll also discuss partnered reading.
Lesson 5: Assessing Reading
Learn how to include reading assessment as part of your teaching process, including regular reading conferences and preparing students for standardized tests.
Lesson 6: Teaching Comprehension
Explore techniques for helping students improve their reading comprehension.
Lesson 7: Shared Reading
Explore shared reading as a way to teach students to read and improve their reading comprehension. See how reading aloud can be helpful at all grade levels.
Lesson 8: Guided Reading
Explore guided reading and discover how to implement it in your classroom.
Lesson 9: Making the Most of Your Time

Lesson 10: Putting It All Together
