Course description

Electrical system protective devices have become high risk devices since NFPA 70E and CSA Z462 have made their regular maintenance a mandated requirement. Arc flash studies and label information are based upon these devices opening up within their specifications. If a protective device is not properly specified, set, tested or maintained it will not open correctly, or perhaps at all, and whatever PPE is listed on the label is immediately under rated.

Protective device failures have caused catastrophic explosions, with injuries, damages and downtime quickly costing millions of dollars. This training course is designed to give plant maintenance personnel hands on experience with inspecting, setting, testing, maintaining and troubleshooting the entire range of electrical system protective devices.

This Canada Training Group course is taught in one of our mobile training centers and is 75% hands on. 8 students work in teams of 2 with 120/208, 480/600V, 5kV, 15kV and 25kV protective devices. Tests that are done are insulation resistance testing, AC and DC dielectric-withstand testing, contact resistance testing, primary injection, secondary injection, contact time, stroke, velocity, over-travel, contact wipe, time travel analysis, first trip analysis, vacuum bottle testing, coil testing, PF/DF/Tan Delta testing, oil sampling, oil testing and control circuit troubleshooting.

The final series of practical labs have students troubleshooting eight 15kV breaker control problems, the last in the blacked out lab with a flashlight. We have had numerous instances where students have gone back to work and solved circuit breaker control problems after completing our training. Your control schemes can also be included in our training as well as testing on your own apparatus.

Canada Training Group has a variety of test equipment that can be used in the training program and your test equipment is also incorporated into the training as well as rented test equipment. The standards used in the course are IEEE Recommended Practice for the Maintenance of Industrial and Commercial Power Systems, NFPA 70B, ANSI/NETA Standard for Maintenance Testing Specifications for Electrical Distribution Equipment and Systems, PEARL Reconditioning Standards and your maintenance standards.

Canada Training Group instructors each have 33 to 54 years of high voltage testing, troubleshooting and maintenance experience and are qualified instructors determined to provide you with training customized to your needs.

On completion, your participants will have the knowledge and skills to fulfill the requirements of the above standards and keep your electrical systems and company properly protected while having the enjoyment of extensive hands-on practical projects.

Your investment will be returned when your next unplanned outage is measured in minutes rather than hours.
