The Effective Subject Matter Expert
Training for SMEs to be expert facilitators of learning
We see it all the time – Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) are called upon to facilitate training, which is outside their comfort zone and often their abilities. Further, just because someone is expert in something doesn’t make them a trainer. Facilitating training requires knowledge of adult learning theory and experience presenting information in a way that resonates with learners.
The Effective Subject Matter Expert helps build skills that your SMEs need to facilitate adult learning. Participants work with their real-life training content to practice presenting information efficiently and effectively, facilitating group discussions, setting up and debriefing exercises, and providing productive learner feedback.
This workshop is based on the book Effective SMEs: A Trainer’s Guide for Helping Subject Matter Experts Facilitate Learning, which was co-authored by Dale Ludwig and Greg Owen-Boger, Turpin’s leadership team.
The Effective Subject Matter Expert includes video recorded in-class exercises followed by private instructor-led video review. This process helps the SMEs recognize and work with their strengths. It also includes access to eCoach – our program for pre-work and post-workshop performance support. Participants receive reusable job aids and reference materials for applying what’s learned in class to situations the trainers face outside of it.

- Understand their dual role as experts and as facilitators of learning
- Engage learners in a productive learning conversation
- Frame the training with clear expectations and learning objectives so that learners understand why they should participate and how the training applies to the work they do
- Create the conditions for a fruitful exchange of ideas and facilitate the learning process
- Weave in their personal stories to make the training content come to life
- Deliver visual aids effectively (even content prepared by others)

- Listen effectively to connect dots and identify common themes
- Encourage and control discussions
