Overview

Credit: 4 PDH

Length: 67 pages

Anyone who has participated in the execution of an R&D Project can appreciate that the uncertainties and the unknowns involved in those projects make reaching a successful outcome very difficult. This course not only identifies the pressures that R&D Projects place on the Engineering Department, but it also presents a few methods that help smoothen the processes involved, which will help increase the R&D Projects' chances of success.

The course introduces the particularities of R&D projects and presents a few methods for managing them. A few project flow charts are presented: flow charts commonly used in small to medium companies as well as the Stage-Gate process and its variations.

Some strategic tools characteristic to R&D Projects are introduced, such as the most appropriate departmental organization, approaches to managing the human factor and handling associated meetings. Decision tools that help clarify the unknowns and reduce the uncertainties that R&D Projects encounter are also introduced (optimizing the order of activities and the Plus-Minus-Interesting method). Additional tools are discussed, such as protection of intellectual property and experimental notes.

Finally, the Design of Experiments strategy is discussed, including One Factor At a Time (OFAT) and Full Factorial Design of Experiments (FFDOE), along with illustrative examples.

This course will help Engineers, Engineering Managers and Project Managers who are interested in improving their management of R&D Projects.
