In Asbestos and Lead Based Paint , you'll learn ...

  • The physical properties of asbestos and lead-based paint
  • Potential health effects and other risk factors of asbestos and lead-based paint
  • Government regulations for buildings with asbestos containing materials or lead-based paint
  • Methods for assessing building materials and making renovations in compliance with the law

Overview

This webinar explains the basic types and properties of asbestos and lead-based paint, as well as the potential dangers and health effects of these materials, and the specific government regulations pertaining to both of them. It will help engineers make safe and accurate assessments of building materials and avoid legal liability when renovating existing buildings.

The first section of this webinar identifies the different types of asbestos and their physical properties, along with the three main groups of asbestos containing materials (ACM), namely, surfacing, thermal system insulation, and miscellaneous (e.g., roofing, flooring, etc.). Additionally, we will examine both friable and non-friable types of ACM. After looking at the health effects and potential dangers of overexposure to asbestos, we will review federal, state, and local regulations concerning asbestos, particularly those regulations established by EPA and OSHA. Finally, we will discuss the obligations these government regulations may place on building owners or owner representatives, such as administering surveys, making notifications, or conducting inspections prior to renovations.

The second section of the webinar follows a similar, easy-to-follow structure in its treatment of lead-based paint by first identifying the properties of lead and its historical uses in lead-based paint, then looking at the potential health effects or dangers, and finally reviewing the government regulations related to lead-based paint and their impact on the work practices of engineers.
