A Comprehensive Approach to Building Excellent ADA Facilities Within the Public Right-of-Way

A Comprehensive Approach to Building Excellent ADA Facilities Within the Public Right-of-Way

Are all of your facilities in the public right-of-way in compliance? Facilities in the public right-of-way (including walkways, ramps, curb ramps, crosswalks, and pedestrian overpasses/underpasses) must be designed, constructed and maintained to serve all users. To meet the needs of all users, those involved with designing, building and maintaining the built environment need a clear understanding of the wide range of abilities that occur within the population and the challenges in the public right-of-way faced by persons with disabilities. Identify applicable laws, regulations and guidelines (particularly ADAAG and PROWAG) as well as best practices pertaining to accessibility for persons with disabilities. Requirements for ensuring accessibility in existing facilities vs. work in new construction and alterations will be discussed. Design elements necessary for achieving accessibility in the public right-of-way will be reviewed and best practices identified. The topic should be particularly useful to local and state agency personnel (and consultants and contractors working for them) with responsibility for designing, constructing, maintaining and administering facilities in the public right-of-way. These include engineers, technicians, architects, landscape architects, public works directors, street supervisors, inspectors, agency counsel and elected officials.
