About
Epicodus's mission is to help people learn the skills they need to get great jobs as web developers. For us, “great jobs” means jobs in growing industries that pay well and provide rewarding work. Beyond the particular skills needed to get these jobs, we aim to help our students become confident self-teachers who can adapt to changing job markets, and great communicators who will work well in teams. We focus on serving people who, by birth or circumstance, don't have easy access to learning the skills they need to get these great jobs.
The program is 25 weeks which includes four, 5-week courses and a 5-week internship. The student can choose one of five tracks:
- Ruby/Rails
- C#/.NET
- PHP/Drupal
- Java/Android
- CSS/Design.
All tracks begin with a course in Intro to Programming and include a course in JavaScript.
Additionally, we are probably best known for “how we teach” vs. “what we teach”. Our students begin coding on day one and learn in a pair programming model where two people share one computer and take turns using the keyboard and mouse. By working together, they catch each other's mistakes, teach each other new skills, work with different partners every day, and come up with ideas together that neither of them would have come up with alone. Pairing is increasingly used by tech companies (like Facebook and Square), and we've found that pair programming helps our students learn faster, as well. We also strongly believe in a flipped classroom model that promotes self-learning and self-teaching. Our teachers are skilled in the languages and frameworks that they teach, however they are available to students more as guides and sherpas vs. lecturers in a traditional classroom environment. By the time our students begin their internships, they have completed 20 weeks of curriculum, logged ~800 hours of hands-on coding time, and are competent at collaborative problem solving.
Before and after graduation our students have the full support of our Student Services and Employment services teams. We stay in weekly contact post-graduation helping our students find the right fit. Providing an approachable, high quality, coding education that enables great employment outcomes is what we want to be best know for.
