Credit: 5 PDH

Length: 54 pages

This five hour course will discuss the different types of traffic signal supports and signal mounting hardware that are in use by the industry.

There are no firmly established rules on how Traffic Signal Heads shall be placed at an intersection, except that they must provide motorists an unobstructed view of the signal indication and the primary Traffic Signal Heads shall be within the Cone of Visibility. The types of mounting hardware shall be determined by the design engineer, and the design engineer shall conform to the requirements of the state and/or local governing agencies having jurisdiction.

Participants of this course will be able to master the placement of Traffic Signal Heads and Poles needed to complete the design of an intersection. At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to determine the placement of Traffic Signal Heads so that they are within the Cone of Visibility. The student will also learn how to perform strain pole loading calculations based on dead loads, wind loads and ice loads on span wires.
