Overview

Length: 20 pages
This introductory course is intended for RF engineers and non-RF engineers involved in the design, deployment and testing of wireless communication systems. Wireless systems exist today in the form of cellular phone service, emergency services radio networks, remote metering and control systems, automatic vehicle location, distributed antenna systems (DAS), Wi-Fi, WiMAX, and Microwave, to mention a few.
This course provides an introduction to the phenomena of radio frequency (RF) interference and its impact on system performance. Consideration for RFI is a very important subject when designing a wireless system, as it will have a direct impact on system performance, user confidence, and ultimately the user’s experience. Lack of care when evaluating RFI has the potential of becoming very costly if addressed after a system has been deployed.
The course begins with a high-level description of the elements of a communication’s link, then it will describe the most common types of RF interference, and how they are generated. This course will also review the effects of interference on system performance through illustrative examples. And finally, the course will address various methods to minimize the possibility of RFI and maintain system performance.
