Better Business Writing
Business writing should not be boring, and neither should training in business writing. Writing business messages well is a service to readers, providing answers to critical questions, encouraging action and instilling confidence. Better Business Writing encourages participants to write clearly and concisely, taking into account current guidelines for usage, style, and punctuation. Building on these essentials, Better Business Writing also helps participants develop sentences, paragraphs, and entire documents with both the reader’s needs and the writer’s objectives in mind.
Training content
At the conclusion of Better Business Writing, participants will be able to:
- Apply prewriting techniques to develop the focus and purpose of your writing
- Know your audience
- Consider the topic and the intended reaction of the audience
- Enhance the clarity of the message by choosing effective words and phrases
- Appropriately utilize tone and content to enhance the message
- Apply active language (selectively using passive language) in all forms of communication
- Select the proper tone to match the purpose
- Create a call to action to motivate readers
- Apply the proper writing rules for:
- Grammar
- Spelling
- Punctuation
- Capitalization
- Determine the best layout for the message and organize content to maximize impact
- Effectively use paragraphs, headings, spacing, and format
- Identify differences in writing email vs. writing reports or letters
- Use proofreading techniques and appreciate the importance of doing so
