Course description

Emotional Intelligence - The New Science of Leadership

Breakthroughs in Emotional Intelligence research show us why our moods and actions have enormous impact on those we lead. In fact, Emotionally Intelligent leadership allows us to inspire, arouse passion and enthusiasm, and keep people motivated and committed. What’s more, Emotionally Intelligent leadership is not just the privilege of those with positional authority. Since leadership flows primarily from who we are as people, not from what we can demand from our position, every member of an organization has the potential to be a great leader, not because of positional power, but because of the interpersonal effectiveness that comes from developing emotional competence.

In this program participants will develop personal leadership skills by applying the competencies of Emotional Intelligence to those specific work related situations, where the ability to influence people and work effectively with others is vital to  professional success. This workshop will introduce a variety of learning activities including small group discussion, teamwork activities, and one-on-one coaching.

Participants will also have the opportunity to complete a self-assessment inventory  that assesses for the 18 emotional competencies corresponding with the emotional  intelligence model introduced in Daniel Goleman's Working With Emotional Intelligence.

Training content

I. Introduction

Leadership is not a title. Leadership is influence, and Emotional Intelligence has a lot to say about influence. The best leaders find effective ways to understand and improve their own and other people’s emotions. This leads to better business results, retention of talent, higher morale, engagement, motivation and commitment. We call this ability to use emotional intelligence to effectively lead others: resonance. In this first section we will introduce participants to the styles of leadership that promote resonance, as well as the emotional competencies that support those styles.

  • Positional Power vs. Personal Power
  • Resonant vs. Dissonant Leadership
  • The Six Styles of Leadership
  • Video clips of each style
  • The Four Resonant Styles
  • The Two Dissonant Styles
  • The Emotional Competencies that support the four resonant styles
  • Development Plan: Aligning assessment results with the styles that participants want to develop during the workshop

II. Mastering Your Mood

Effective leaders do not use their mood to master others. They actually master their mood and manage themselves. This is because mood is contagious, and all great leadership begins with the task of creating a positive and optimistic workplace mood. In this section, participants will discover how emotional self-awareness and self-management builds resonance and leads to effective leadership.

  • The importance of Self-Awareness and Self-Management
  • Self-Awareness exercise
  • Managing Disruptive Emotions

III. Mapping Your Moves

Change events in the workplace require clear direction and strong visionary leadership skills. During this section of the workshop, participants will discover the importance of developing a sense of vision and purpose in order to influence and motivate others.

  • The Visionary Leadership Style
  • How visionary leadership builds resonance
  • Developing your sense of vision and purpose
  • Using stories and communicating your vision to others

IV. Massaging Your Message

Motivation is a fire within a person, not under a person. We do not motivate people as much as we manage the messages that we send to people. In this section, participants will focus on how they can make people feel important or unimportant based on their use of social-awareness and communication skills.

  • The importance of empathy in building resonance
  • Practicing empathy
  • Feeling blockers and behaviors that hinder effective communication
  • Content vs. Feeling in communication
  • How to send positive feeling messages

V. Multiplying Your Mark – Relational Skills and Influence

Someone once said: “If you think you are leading and no one is following, then you are taking a walk.” Leadership is influence, and influence primarily flows from the quality of our interpersonal interactions, not from our position. This section is designed for participants to develop the relational skills that are necessary for coaching, team building, and collaborative decision making.

  • The Coaching Style of Leadership
  • The Affiliative Style of Leadership
  • The Democratic Style of Leadership
  • Your legacy as a developer of people

VI. Putting It all Together

This section focuses on application activities that are designed to apply all of the principles and tools that have been covered above. In the one day version of this course, participants will be given shorter case studies and a shorter coaching exercise. In the two day version of the course, participants will be given a more complex case study. They will also be placed in action learning groups in order to practice coaching skills.

  • Situational Leadership Exercise - participants will discuss when to use the various leadership styles
  • Visionary Leadership Exercise - participants will construct and tell stories to communicate vision
  • Coaching Style Exercise - participants will use a coaching model to coach one another. In the two day course they will use an action learning model.
  • Democratic Style Exercise - participants will use a case study to practice resolving a conflict using the democratic style
