Often, people in technical roles have to present information to a non-technical audience. While some do this well, the vast majority struggle because they don’t understand what their audience wants from them. So, they present everything, using technical terms that fly over participants’ heads, and bounce from topic-to-topic, blissfully unaware that they’ve lost their audience somewhere around “hello.”
Technical Presentations for Non-Technical Audiences puts an end to long, rambling, highly-technical presentations. We help technical people understand that there’s a difference between the data itself and what the data means. Non-technical audiences need the latter. We help participants focus on the needs and objectives of their audience and take a less-is-more approach when delivering information and data. Participants will learn how to read the room, become listener-focused, use stories to convey complex information, and much more. The result is highly-engaged listeners who understand the content so that business gets done.
The class is interactive and makes use of video-recorded exercises and private, instructor-led video review. This two-instructor process gives participants guidance and feedback in a group setting as well as individually during video review. This helps participants identify their strengths and develop the skills they need to succeed.
Technical Presentations for Non-Technical Audiences includes access to eCoach – our program for pre-work and post-workshop performance support. Participants receive reusable job aids and reference materials to help them apply what they learn in class to the situations they face outside of it. Who should attend?
This workshop is suitable for those who present complex technical information to non-technical audiences. Those who work in IT, finance, engineering, the sciences, insurance, marketing, and R&D are typical candidates. Attendees should have some presentation experience, but not everyone needs to be at the same level.
Training content
Throughout the class, participants apply the principles of The Orderly Conversation® to their own real-life technical presentations. Each presenter’s audience may vary – from small or large in-person groups to remote or hybrid environments. Regardless of circumstances, successful participants will learn to
- Take a less-is-more approach by trimming data, simplifying content, and streamlining messages
- Communicate effectively face-to-face, virtually, and in hybrid situations
- Frame their presentations so that they are listener-focused
- Manage nervousness and gain self-awareness
- Engage listeners in a comfortable, flexible conversation while being clear and concise
- Use projected, hand-held, or hard copy visuals effectively, whether face-to-face or virtual, seated or standing
- Use virtual tools, including video, for maximum engagement
- Use the power of story to simplify and enhance key messages
- Think on their feet and answer questions with ease
- Read the audience to know when they are lost or when it’s time to move on
- Facilitate fruitful interactions with listeners
