Length: 51 pages

Legionnaires' disease is a common name for one of the several illnesses caused by Legionnaires' disease bacteria (LDB). Legionnaires' disease is an infection of the lungs and is a form of pneumonia. More than 43 species of Legionella have been identified and more than 20 have been linked with human diseases. Legionellosis is the term for the diseases produced by LDB. In addition to Legionnaires' disease, the same bacteria also cause a flu-like disease called Pontiac fever.

In this course, the student will learn the causes of Legionnaires' disease and some of the methods used to detect an outbreak. In addition, the student will learn about symptoms of the disease and high risk people who are more likely to be susceptible to Legionnaires’ disease. Finally, methods are discussed to mitigate the likelihood of developing Legionnaires' disease in building systems, such as cooling towers, hot water heaters and water distribution systems.
