Polarity Thinking: Developing Leaders Through the Power of "And"
Polarity Thinking: Developing Leaders through the Power of “And”
Polarity Thinking principles and tools provide individuals with a method to access a deeper awareness of what it takes to create collaboration, manage change, and improve results.
The latest research reveals that the advantages of being able to understand and manage polarities ie, the ability to see and hold two very different points of view simultaneously are many. These are known as dilemmas, paradoxes and chronic issues. However leaders who are able to maneuver complexity and ambiguity often find their performance improves.
How can an individual raise leadership performance? It is by recognizing that each of our values, those that motivate us to take action, serve us best when seen and managed as part of an interdependent pair. When supplemented with something very different, yet complementary, the opportunity for success increases dramatically over the long term. When we don’t see or value the interdependent pair, our leadership effectiveness suffers as well as our organizations effectiveness.
Polarity Thinking and Mapping brings to our notice what may have been hidden in the past. It is a visible and tangible way to raise awareness, be more intentional in our actions and to get better results.

This onsite training is divided into morning and afternoon sessions which are described below:
Morning Session: The Self-Aware Leader
Knowing yourself and what you value builds your leadership capacity. Learning how your values are connected to other interdependent values is the next step for increased performance; for example, a focus on both Task and Relationship when leading others is a better approach than only focusing on one or the other.
Polarity Thinking principles and tools are explained and experienced to expand both your capacity and your wisdom. When leaders can appreciate their own important pairs of different, yet connected values, they reduce their own “blind spots.”
- Leadership “case study” stories
- How Polarities look and work within me and within my team
- Identify key polarity to map and use for developmental growth including Action Steps and Early Warnings
Afternoon Session: Managing Problems and Change
Building upon the first session’s principles and methods, you will apply what you have learned to more deeply understand the challenges and difficulties facing your organization. You will work within peer groups to identify the polarities most likely at play given the challenges you experience in your organization. You will learn how to build support for multiple points of view simultaneously while learning how to leverage these views to a better outcome.
