Course description
Monitoring demonstrates results and informs decision making while evaluation assesses what results have been achieved and how they have been achieved. This course will first discuss the main differences between monitoring and evaluation. You will learn the purpose of establishing a monitoring and evaluation system, and study the three main reasons why we monitor. You will study the 5 steps of establishing an M&E system, including how to determine a methodology and a source.
You will then study results and results-based management and frameworks, and look into outputs, outcomes, and goals. You will learn how to develop and select performance indicators, such as quantitative indicators, which show whether or not change and progress has been made. You will then study sources of information and methods of data collection. In addition, you will look into assumptions and risks and grouping indicators, and learn how to develop output monitoring tools.
Systematic and robust monitoring and evaluation depends on coherent program design. This course will give you a better understanding of how sound M&E systems are critical for helping organizations understand up to what extent they have inched towards their goal. By the end of this course, you will understand how to establish a monitoring and evaluation system. This is a powerful skill, so check out the course today and learn something really useful in just a few short hours.

Introduction to Designing & Implementing M&E Systems
Description: This module introduces the 10 basic principles on how to Design and implement a Monitoring and Evaluation System, which provides a structured framework for systematically planning how data is collected, analysed and used to inform decision making. The module will also explore some of the foundations for defining results, developing and selecting key performance indicators, how to collect data and information, grouping indicators and developing output monitoring tools.
